Don
On September 7th, Hugues de Kerdrel will run solo a 25km trail on the GR34 path along the Crozon peninsula. Objective: Your donations will help finance the IODYSSEUS program which aims at collecting planktons in the Atlantic in order to help create a marine sun screen good for you and good for the Ocean.
As everybody I encounter our pollution around the world onshore as well as offshore and its deadly effects. Each and everyone of us can act to help our ocean and us. Organising and running this Trail for the Ocean is a positive step in the right direction.
WHY A TRAIL AND WHY THE OCEAN?
"In my life surfing and running go hand in hand. So do Land and Sea. When on my board I see plastic debris too often. While running in remote areas I also run over plastic. The story goes that wrapping up a session, full of plastic debris all around me, I decided to help the Ocean : I would run, solo, the first edition of A Trail For The Ocean.
Solo? And why not? I believe everyone of us can contribute to produce great energies to help our planet. Next September 7th 2020, I will finish the Trail For The Ocean and hand over all your donations to IODYSSEUS, The IODYSSEUS project is where Ocean Racing meets Oceanic scientific research and share it with the world ." Hugues de Kerdrel
Why create a marine sun screen ?
1 of our 2 lungs can breathe thanks to oxygen generated by planktons in the Ocean. Not only are the chemicals found in sun creams toxic to coral but they are toxic to coastal and oceanic plankton.
The world manufactures >20,000 tonnes per year, and if we were to dissolve this into all the oceans at the same time, it would kill all life in the oceans and that would be the end of humanity.
Some countries such as Hawaii has now formally banned sun block containing Oxybenzone. What can we to protect our skin and the Ocean at the same time?
The solution might be found near our home, very near us in fact. In the ocean, offshore in Brittany waters. A specific molecule within marine planktons, might help us find the equation because the planktons we are after are mineral salts rich, and high UV concentration resistant. They also survive high and brutal temperature changes.
So let us imagine for a moment a sun screen made of marine planktons, highly protectant, eco and ocean friendly, in other words a natural ocean good for you and for the ocean, a sun screen that allows us to breathe.
Iodysseus is recognised by the United Nations as an Ocean Sciences Programme for Sustainable Development.
Together let's launch this first marine sun screen good for us and good for the Ocean
Our non profit organisation
For the last 20 years I've been running and surfing on all continents. I have come across so much plastic pollution both in land and in the wave that I have decided to act.
I launched our non-profit organisation OVER THE SWELL which aims at supporting professional programs geared at protecting our Ocean. Our moto is: Running to surf a clean ocean.
OVER THE SWELL organises A TRAIL FOR THE OCEAN, a 25km coastal trail, every year in order to raise money for these great programs.
