The line up is where waves start to break, where the surfer stands on his board and takes off into the wave. It’s where everything starts!
A good line up happens when the swell reaches the coast, forming regular lines ideal for surfing.
If the wind, the seabed, the tide, and the currents align, a set of waves forms in a regular sequence offering the surfer the ideal conditions.
The line up is the result of the random and tumultuous interaction of nature’s forces and the laws of physics.
The beauty of a wave, or its perfection, is subjective. However, our selection should make all surfers dream.
We asked scores of photographers to take part in this project. Our objective was to collate stunning photos of the best surf spots around the world. Their response was enthusiastic and we were wowed by the selection of images we received.
Our wish was to share with you this incredible gift in a special edition book.
“Line up” was born.
We received over 4000 wonderful photos from 60 photographers and had to make a selection according to strict criteria.
The key requirement was a minimum of two waves on the picture.
This is why we were not able to include some close ups of spectacular waves.
We initially shortlisted 1500, then 450 and finally we were left with 180 photos. You can imagine how difficult the next step was, as we could only keep approximately 80 photos before going to print.
We were keen to include a variety of landscapes, seasons, countries, and viewing angles, and this helped us make the final cut.
In the end, the final decision is always personal and subjective and we hope that you will agree with our choice!
The “Line up” project supports Surfrider Foundation Europe in its mission to protect our oceans and coastlines.
For each book sold we will donate one euro to the Foundation.
Pierre Nouqueret, the author, shares the story behind “Line up”:
«Producing a compilation of the most beautiful line ups had been on my mind for a very long time. I was always struck by the awesome waves in surfing magazines or websites. Creating this book may be my personal search for the perfect wave.
About ten years ago I was fortunate to work on several books on my favourite topic: waves!
Recently I felt compelled to start a similar project but there was never enough time… Suddently Covid19 happened and everything stopped.
Surely this was a sign!»
We are self publishing this book.
The fundraising will enable us to gage the level of interest amongst our potential readers.
Reaching our Ekosea crowdfunding target will cover part of the printing costs.
The “Line up” crew thanks you for your support.
