JUNE 8TH 2019 / THE WORLD OCEANS DAY
On June 8th, Hugues de Kerdrel will run solo a 25km trail on the GR34 path along the Crozon peninsula. Objective: Your donations will help finance Tara Foundation’s educational program to strengthen kids’ awareness on the danger of microplastics in the Ocean.
WHY A TRAIL AND WHY THE OCEAN?
"In my life surfing and running go hand to hand. So do Land and Sea. When on my board I see plastic debris too often. While running in remote areas I also run over plastic. The story goes that wrapping up a session, full of plastic debris all around me, I decided to help the Ocean : I would run, solo, the first edition of A Trail For The Ocean.
Solo? And why not? I believe everyone of us can contribute to produce great energies to help our planet. Next June 8th 2019, during The World Oceans Day I will finish the Trail For The Ocean and we hand over all your donations to Fondation Tara. Fondation Tara Expeditions organizes scientific research missions aboard the legendary schooner Tara to study and understand the impact of climate change and the ecological crisis on our oceans to assure the good health of our planet." Hugues de Kerdrel
WHY RAISE AWARENESS ON MICROPLASTICS?
88% of the surface of the ocean is polluted with microplastics. They derive from the breakdown and fragmentation of our cosmetics or food containers… Through the combined action of the sun, oxidation and water currents, some of this plastic waste degrades into very small pieces, microplastics, invisible to the naked eye. Plastics are veritable sponges when it comes to soaking up persistent organic pollutants and can accumulate in living tissue at every stage of the food chain and thus find their way into humans !
HELPING FONDATION TARA TO RAISE OUR SCHOOL KIDS AWARENESS
Fondation Tara is first and foremost a formidable human and scientific adventure. Through their famous schooner Tara, or floating laboratory, Fondation Tara organize scientific research missions to understand better the impact of climate change on our Ocean, its our future...
... And because our kids are our future too, Fondation Tara has made the education of young people one of its priorities. In partnership with Education Nationale, France’s department of Education, educational materials based on the Tara are distributed to Teachers. Every year 3000 teachers are trained to use this material in the official curriculum. Last but not least, Tara develops its own educational activities for our kids. This is our purpose: help Fondation Tara finance these activities.
For the last 20 years I've been running and surfing on all continents. I have come accross so much plastic pollution both in land and in the wave that I have launched "A Trail For The Ocean" to raise €5500 to help Fondation Tara Expeditions.
The € 5,500 raised will be donated to Fondation Tara Expéditions to help fund its actions to educate schoolchildren about the danger of micro-plastics in the ocean.
